Attorney Referrals for Epilepsy-Related DiscriminationIf you would like a referral to an attorney who may be able to provide you with direct legal advice concerning your rights and/or legal representation in a particular case involving discrimination based on epilepsy, you may contact the Epilepsy Foundation's Jeanne A. Carpenter Epilepsy Legal Defense Fund. Legal Assistance for Other IssuesIf you need legal assistance concerning a matter unrelated to epilepsy (for instance, assistance concerning a family law, personal injury or criminal defense matter), and cannot afford to retain an attorney, you might contact your local legal services (also referred to as legal aid) or public defenders office. Legal aid offices represent individuals who are financially needy in civil disputes such as landlord-tenant, social security, and family law cases, while public defenders generally work on behalf of financially needy persons in criminal cases. You can locate the phone number for these organizations in the "lawyer" section of your local yellow pages or in the government section of the phone book. Alternatively, you may locate the appropriate legal services office in your state by visiting the website of the Legal Services Corporation; the public defenders office can be located by visiting the website of the National Legal Aid and Defender Association. To locate a private attorney who can provide assistance in matters that are not directly related to epilepsy, including attorneys who may be willing to provide pro bono (free) legal assistance, you may contact your local or state bar association for lawyer referrals. These phone numbers can be found in the yellow pages of the phone book under Lawyers Referral Service, or you may review the Consumers' Guide to Finding Legal Help prepared by the American Bar Association or you may contact the Association at (312) 988-5000. |
